I have the John Deere 4100. When I am cutting longer grass with the mid-mount mower, it bogs down at times which can be expected. But it exhausts black smoke when it does so. I am assuming this is normal for a diesel, yes? Also, the mower makes a loud buzzing sound at times when mowing and I can't really tie it to the grass or any debris. It may be related to grass not being ejected properly. Yes, I keep it raised as high as possible and the grass may be a foot high or more at times. It doesn't seem to matter when rpm it is at although obviously there is slightly more power at higher rpm.

When the diesel engine is pulling down briefly under load, black or dark grey smoke is normal. As to the buzzing sound, check to see if the PTO driveline can contact the tractor frame or hydraulic lines especially since you indicate you sometimes mow with the deck fully raised. When mowing, the throttle setting on the 4100 should be adjusted to wide open according to my Mower Operators Manual. This keeps the blade tip speed up for best cutting performance. ....

Droz,As Jack said, black smoke is an effect of a diesel working. I haven't had a chance to use my own mid-mower this summer, but remember the dealer's unit (demo) made a buzzing sound when the deck was fully raised. I'm not sure exactly what it was, but it did sound like a PTO issue. The dealer mentioned something about the deck not being adjusted properly, what ever he meant by that. Wasn't a focal point at the time.Sounds like we need to move where you live. Here in E. PA, I haven't seen anything being mowed in about 2 months. ....

Mowing foot high grass with a finish mower is bound to drag the engine down unless going very slow. Another possible cause is that sometimes on the JD's the lift control handle will not return to the neutral position after being lifted. This will cause the hydraulics to whine and will also drag down the engine. Hope this helps! ....

Have you considered a bush hog. You are using a finish mower for some heavy duty work. ....

Just thought of something else,when the dealer brought his 4100 (54"Deck) for a demo at our house. I purposely left the grass grow long, In order to see what the mower would do. Granted, our yard is a fine blade grass, not a field type grass. But it had no problem cutting 5"-7" of thick wet grass in high range, as fast as the tractor could go, without fazing the motor. I doubt that I would ever mow at that speed, but I was curious to see what it would do. So in your situation of bogging the motor......I think you need a bushhog as others have mentioned. ....

Actually, this is Wisconsin and I know some of the other parts of the country are lacking rain but the grass here grows 8" in a week, the weeds even faster. It probably would have been a good idea to get a bush hog or something similar originally but it is fairly even now. Plus I have hundreds of trees that I have to mow close to. Next year I will be doing the fields and may need something else though. Thanks for all the advice so far. It is hard to be sure what is normal when you have nothing to compare it to. ....
